The World Wall: A Vision of the Future without Fear (linked here) |
Judy Baca as an artist on the West Coast (LA) and is a very successful Latina in art. Through her art and her work with the city of LA, she displays a variety of pieces that tackle current events and issues important to society. Judy Baca empowers the "unempowered" focusing on women, youth and even has brought together rival gang members for a mural in order to create some common ground and peace.
Judy Baca, in my opinion, is a "consciousness" artist in the sense that she puts so much thought into her work, especially since a lot of it is public murals as photographed above. Specifically, an example is the great wall of Los Angeles where she involved the community into her mural by working with youth, interviewing marginalized people and learning about the history first hand. As a woman in art and even a Latina in art, she really takes that extra step to understand the incredible position shes in but also pays it forward and remains humble by involving diverse groups into her workspaces.
