Leonor Fini

 COURTESY OF WEINSTEIN GALLERY

I first met Leonor Fini's art work when I decided to go to the Museum of Sex in New York City on my nineteenth birthday. I was not expecting to be shocked by much on my visit to the renowned museum as I knew its collections were going to be exotic. Fini's work, who was painting mostly in the early twentieth century, was the first exhibit to view when exploring the museum. It was a great start to the museum as her work is a great representation and challenges the concepts of sexuality, femininity, and as well as gender roles.

To the right, her painting, "The Botany Lesson" in English, depicts two people looking at what seems to be a flower. Looking beyond the so-called flower, it can actually be inferred that it is a vagina and the people are studying the complex reproductive organ that female bodies posses.

Leonor Fini was an open bisexual woman who admired living in company by many people that included her pet cats and different lovers, all of which she called a community. While this description of Fini seems normal today, it was not the norm in the twentieth century. Fini was an artist who chose to express her sexual escapades in paintings. She challenged gender roles by placing women and men equally, not one above the other. A famous painting of hers titled "Femme assise sur un homme nu" depicts Fini laying on top of a covered naked man.

While this painting seems rather innocent, the simple fact that the woman in the painting, Fini herself, is resting on top a sleeping, naked and vulnerable man, says a lot about herself as a woman. She is expressing this power that she possesses and it does not matter whether she is male or female. It is a strong willed painting that depicts women possess power just as much as men do.

Leonor Fini's art work is a mastermind as her art work expresses the power women have. Her art work challenged the ideas that women's sexuality was a taboo or even close to non existent. She believed that women should be in the same level as men, not undermined for being the supposed weaker sex. Fini was an artist ahead of her time and her art work will forever be timeless.
